What Types of Marriage Licenses? Texas offers several licenses: formal, informal (common-law), and civil union. The state also offers a Domestic Agreement that many employers and other institutions recognize, but it is not considered a record of marriage. Prices for marriage licenses vary across county jurisdictions – the cost averages between $60 to $90; cards, money orders, cash, debit cards are accepted.

Tip #1
Don’t wait until the last day to get the license, but don’t get it too early!
Tip #2
There is a 72-hour waiting period from the day you attain your license before you can use it unless you took the marriage course (see below).
Tip #3
You have 90 days, generally, to utilize your license, again probably best not to wait until the last minute.

Texas requires the officiant to take responsibility for submitting the completed license within 30 days of the ceremony and signing of the license.
